We have been very lucky to stay at the Pondo (wryly shortened from ‘Ponderosa’ during construction) for the weekend. As designers, we usually see the last of a building doing the punch list. Staying in a (nearly) completed project is almost unheard of – it was thrilling and nerve-wracking at the same time. Below are a few of the more than 900 pictures we took:

Looking down from the balcony. Paving and landscaping enhance the project significantly.
Red fabric shades will be installed over the metal canopies in the summer. Recessed lighting in the eaves will make the shades glow. Here the canopies are shadeless, in “snow load mode”.
Bunkhouse at sunset. The canopies are designed to allow frequent heavy snowfalls to pass through, and admit winter sun to the house.
Fresh eggs for breakfast from the farm down the road. We learned that the color of the egg is specific to the chicken’s breed.

A strong connection through the building to the landscape was an important design consideration.
This little guy got the concept, but was thwarted by the glass as he tried to fly through the bunkhouse. He recovered quickly.
Sliding shutters mitigate the afternoon sun. Gaps in the reclaimed cedar let the breeze pass through. The shutters stack between the sliding glass doors when not in use.
Joe’s restored International, in service in the orchard at last.
Framing is often one of the best parts of construction. Here in the barn, the wood will remain exposed. North-facing clerestory windows will be operable to vent warm air in the summer.
